Friends of the Library records, 1934-1996.

These records document the administration and activities of the library support organization. Among the subjects covered in the correspondence include: the Annual Library Day Dinner and presentation, docent activities, the McDonald Rare Book Room, and the Co-op Book Awards. Programs for the Annual Library Day Dinner as well as other events such as library dedications can be found in brochures. The paper records also contain a historical essay relating to the origins of the Friends of the Library.

The first "official" college library was likely that of the Adelphian Literary Society, which in 1880 had acquired the Corvallis Library Association's Library. Ten years later, the Adelphians transferred their 605-volume library to the college. By 1899, when the first full-time, nonstudent librarian, Arthur Stimpson, was appointed, the collection had grown to 3000 volumes and 500 pamphlets and bulletins.
